CURSE & BLESS — Starting Fires in the Local EDM Scene and Making an Impact

This shit is legit.

In an industry that is saturated with commercial pop music dominating the airwaves these days (not that there’s anything wrong with that), it’s always nice to have a breath of fresh air courtesy of a local act that does not bring in the usual flavor and aims to set a standard that will remain on top for a very long time.  The Philippines has always been known to be a country that thrives on love songs, R&B, indie acoustic and alternative rock music, along with the occasional novelty hits, but once you hear of Curse & Bless, you’ll definitely get a taste of locally made electronic dance music that reaches international standards, especially if you’re a self-professed raver.

Comprised of Chicago-raised Jared Celemin and half-Japanese beauty Karen Toyoshima, this EDM Producer/DJ duo has been making waves in the local scene for quite some time now, especially with their brand of music.  Jared has amassed quite the credentials under his belt, having opened for Steve Aoki at the Aragon Theater in Chicago, worked closely with the country’s pride and joy, Apl De Ap, and many more, thereby proving his legitimacy not just as a DJ but also a producer.  Karen herself is quite the artist, being a Theater Arts major and has worked with ABS CBN for various productions, though her love for DJ-ing is what got these two together to make the kind of music that induces massive face melting and body-reverberating bass.

When one listens to them, several international producers & artists come to mind, including Skrillex, The Bloody Beetroots, Daft Punk, Justice and a ton more influences.  What is even more impressive, however, is the fact that they are the brains behind what is the only (and biggest, for that matter) EDM network in the country, EDM Philippines.

Increasing awareness on EDM by the minute

Curse & Bless have also founded a collective of producers & DJs in the Philippines (of which yours truly is a part) called Kurai.  This collective aims to turn the industry on its head, and it doesn’t seem to be long from now before that happens.

Theo Martel Alpas (Theo Martel), Kaiizer Tabuada (Mister Krumbs), Karen Toyoshima (Curse & Bless), Derek Amar (Schmaltz Music), Jared Celemin (Curse & Bless), Ramil Centena (Schmaltz Music) and some drunk, red-faced, banana cap-wearing guy called Mistah NerF… #KURAIMUTHAFUKKAZ (Bacolod’s Dubstep King, Zemi Quintos AKA Zeetrex, was MIA at that moment)

They are currently working on new projects, some which are actually quite large in scale and would definitely pave the way for producers & DJs like them to create an industry standard the likes of no one has ever seen.  Of course, they’re also hard at work on a new EP which appropriately describes the music they make… SAVAGE.

Yep, totally legit Pinoy EDM that goes beyond the shores in terms of quality

With EDM gradually being on the rise in the Philippines, one could not think of any perfect example of who will carry the flag, but C&B is as worthy as it gets.  The fire keeps burning; it’s only going to get brighter and hotter with these two around.

If you would like to know all about what they’ve got to offer, you only have to check out the link below.

Skrillex x Robyn – Dancing on My Own (Mistah NerF Remix)

The undisputed master of hard edged EDM in the whole wide world (our opinion, of course)

Skrillex, AKA Sonny Moore, has always been considered as the punk god of EDM, and his music truly reflects that.  With roots that stem from a screamo-metalcore background, you can truly sense the rebellious nature that each and every track of his intends to showcase.  People go nuts over his sets, with millions attending each event, and adding to that a plethora of EPs & remixes which have certainly caused some massive face melting.

The uber-talented songstress from Sweden, now with a more mature sound that resonates with audiences everywhere

Robyn, on the other hand, first came to fame back in the mid-90’s with her track “Show Me Love”, which still continues to see some rotation in the airwaves in local radio stations.  Her newer work, on the other hand, have an edgier vibe to them.  While still pop dance in design, they certainly show quite the maturity, which only goes to reflect Robyn’s growth as an artist as well.

When you combine the two, you get a massive track which does not skimp out on groove, emotional dramatics and a sense of aggression.  Skrillex made a remix of “Dancing on My Own” which, unfortunately, never saw the light of day, except if you happened to attend some live shows by the man himself or his mentor, 12th Planet.  If you haven’t heard the original track, here it is.  Catchy and emotional, just the way we like it.

Nonetheless, leave it to Mistah NerF to take what was already a formed structure and build upon it even more.  Some would call this a remix, others who are more technical about semantics would refer to it as a bootleg.  However, with more than 8,000 plays already plus becoming a regularly featured track in MashupRadio.Com, this is one track that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already.  Listen to the track with the link provided below, and grab a free download while you’re at it!
