Quit the Hatin’, People

As of the past few days, a thought had dawned on me.  Before that, though, let me tell you a few things about myself…

  1.  I am a simple guy, living in the Philippines.  I take pleasure in knowing people are sharing the good vibes with one another.
  2. I am the eternal pacifist who likes to see opposing sides come to an understanding, with or without me involved.  #GoodGuy, as someone very dear to me would like to put it.
  3. I don’t like to get into fights, and as much as I feel that some people deserve a wake-up punch in the face for some antics they pull off, I’d rather talk it out and speak my mind.
  4. I also like to share my music to people who would appreciate it, knowing fully well that I pour my heart, soul, tears and sweat into every single track that I make, because I am most passionate about the craft of producing.

I also appreciate the fact that there ARE people out there who go out of their way, taking some time to check out what I have to offer, liking my music, sharing it with their friends and helping me gain a fan base, especially in a country wherein Electronic Dance Music is continually on the rise.  I’m not just talking about typical 128-BPM progressive house music that is quite abundant in clubs (though I do make my fair share of such style of tracks).  Heck, for every Negros Love Dance Festival, there are many more ravers getting educated on the diversity of EDM, and what other genres they have yet to experience, genres that I am truly passionate about.

Deep House, Progressive House, Electro, Trap, Dubstep, Moombahcore… You name it, #NLDF2014 brought it.

Yet, despite all my simplistic ways, good intentions and hopeful dreams, it  cannot be denied that the DJ and music industry is rife with politics, power plays and people trying to screw each other up the ass without consent.  There’s just too much dirty laundry going on.

Just a week ago, I’ve  been receiving HATE comments simply because I featured a DJ/Producer duo that has been getting on the bad side of the industry for a while now, but I just laughed it off.  I would admit that they are my friends, but I don’t see anyone as enemies either. ANYONE.  I’d be the first to admit that if I felt somebody I knew needed either a literal or figurative kick to the balls, I would not hesitate to give that out of tough love, enhanced clarity of mind and some necessary awakenings or realizations.

Beliiiiieee dat shit…

Now, I recognize that I have a few friends that are quite outspoken about certain things (as I myself am at certain times), and I’m not just talking about my side of the camp here.  It always helps to maintain an objective point of view on things, and to see things from different angles, and in each of those angles, there’s always someone starting a fire.  Therefore, it may not be my responsibility, but if no one is gonna douse the flames that have been rising constantly over the past few months, I might as well take up that mantle.

Naive, I am not.  It’s pretty obvious that egos get in the way of things, and the next thing you know, people stomp over one another.  A voice speaks out, others follow suit, and sometimes it is not for the better.  For the most part, it’s all just blind hatred and a lack of common sense, mainly because somebody in authority said it first and you feel obligated to speak on their behalf instead of against, considering we all have free will PLUS a concept of right and wrong.

Yet, we all process things differently, and it will always be difficult to make others see a more rational and level point of view because feelings on certain matters are way too strong to be dissuaded or reduced to the point of near non-existence.  That, however, does not mean such an occurrence is unfathomable.

The whole point of this post is that there has just been too much hatin’ going on lately, and for a community  that is supposed to be united by a love and passion for electronic dance music, we sure do end up making a mockery of #PLUR.  I absolutely do not care whether one is a veteran of the game, or someone who is still new in the industry — we are all fair game if we go out of line, no matter how minor of an incident it may be.  We can always filter out the negativity and hope that the fires die down on their own, but don’t you think it’s time that we’ve all tried to see things eye-to-eye in some form or fashion?  Attitudes do go a long way in making an impression.  I believe that.  However, if you don’t like each other, at least respect one another for their respective crafts.  If you got a problem with someone, take it up with them personally instead of making a big scene all over social networks for all to see just so you can have others siding with you.  If things work out, give yourself a chance to get to know the person instead of making initial judgments.

What I’m getting at is — Quit the hating, people.  Don’t be snitches and bitches.

‘Nuff said.

Stop comparing dicks and arguing who’s got the biggest proverbial cock in the business, because we are all just part of the same community.  Why anyone would ever want to lose several brain cells trying to feed trolls, initiate turf wars or enlarge their egos by saying they’re better in one way or another is beyond me, to be honest.  Just go about your business, do your thing and let fate decide on things.    The words PEACE, LOVE, UNITY and RESPECT have already worn out their welcome by several decades because of constant misuse, but it sure would be nice if all of us gave some actual meaning to them.

BASSLINES AND HEARTBREAKS — An LP Review

Taking you on an emotional rollercoaster, EDM style

A few weeks ago, I had created an LP that contains a lot of emotional resonance in it simply because I’m an emo kind of motherf**ker who is so damned in touch with his feelings (for better or for worse).  I had sent it to EDM Philippines‘ Raven Mendoza for a proper review before releasing it for public listening and downloading on the 18th of July 2014 without even knowing what she thought of it (trust me when I say that I had continuously asked her how she felt about the entire release and no response was given, instead getting the ‘you’ll see when I’m done with it’ reply).  Now that she had finished the review, here is what she thinks of the LP…

and heeeere weeeee… Go.
Review

“Following the success of his first album under Beats4DJs Records, Dimas John Ong AKA Mistah Nerf is now at it again with his new LP entitled Basslines and Heartbreaks set to be released on the 18th. Listening to it the first time, you would know that Nerf is no beginner in music production.

Bass junkies would surely love the songs “Tru Rasta”, “Higher”, “Awake” and “In Lust, In Love”. But bass is not just what’s present in the EP, you could chill out with “AngelFace”, taking great samples from Fra Lippo Lippi’s “Angel”. The Ragga Twins, known best for their collaborations with Skrillex on “Ragga Bomb” and “All is Fair in Love and Brostep,” had also made an appearance in the album with the track “Tru Rasta”.

One of my favorites is “In Lust, In Love” because of its simple vocals courtesy of Fatima. I love the combination of sweet and romantic vibe cueing heavy bass drops and powerful drum beats. Another one on my list is “Higher” Feat. K Chan. It goes to show you that vocals can have a great impact to music. Not only did K Chan display exceptional talent but she also went a little further by rapping several lyrics of the song which I found extraordinary and unique.

The Verdict

8.5 / 10. Nerf did a great job of pumping us up with melodic tunes and rough bass with “Basslines and Heartbreaks”. We never fall short of the things that we always look for in these kind of songs. The thing is, we hear so much of these heavy bass drops that we fail to find the uniqueness in it. On a more critical perspective, I would say that the tracks were a little bit “typical” but I am not saying that they are inadequately produced. Believe me, the song is expertly done; clean and are on the right levels. It went to the proper mastering process which came out beautifully.

Hats off to Mistah Nerf for showing us his talent in music production instead of insulting people on the group (EDM Philippines DJs & Producers). Given the exclusive release on soundcloud, I had the opportunity to listen to the EP in its entirety. I highly recommend you to give “Basslines and Heartbreaks” a listen. For producers, it gives you more inspiration to strive harder and perfect your skills and for EDM lovers, synths and bass will certainly put you on a state of nirvana.

Whew…
Getting Personal

A conversation with Nerf through Facebook revealed that he derived inspiration for the entire LP from a girl he met when he went to Bulabod Festival in Puerto Galera last May.

🙂

When listening to the underlying tones of majority of the tracks, you could tell that he fell and fell HARD. Whoever you may be, we do hope you give this album a listen.

The EP will be available on July 18, Friday. You can fully download it on soundcloud; feel free to follow, like and comment. To keep you updated with what’s happening in the EDM scene of the Philippines, you can also like the facebook fan page EDM Philippines or join our group.”

CURSE & BLESS — Starting Fires in the Local EDM Scene and Making an Impact

This shit is legit.

In an industry that is saturated with commercial pop music dominating the airwaves these days (not that there’s anything wrong with that), it’s always nice to have a breath of fresh air courtesy of a local act that does not bring in the usual flavor and aims to set a standard that will remain on top for a very long time.  The Philippines has always been known to be a country that thrives on love songs, R&B, indie acoustic and alternative rock music, along with the occasional novelty hits, but once you hear of Curse & Bless, you’ll definitely get a taste of locally made electronic dance music that reaches international standards, especially if you’re a self-professed raver.

Comprised of Chicago-raised Jared Celemin and half-Japanese beauty Karen Toyoshima, this EDM Producer/DJ duo has been making waves in the local scene for quite some time now, especially with their brand of music.  Jared has amassed quite the credentials under his belt, having opened for Steve Aoki at the Aragon Theater in Chicago, worked closely with the country’s pride and joy, Apl De Ap, and many more, thereby proving his legitimacy not just as a DJ but also a producer.  Karen herself is quite the artist, being a Theater Arts major and has worked with ABS CBN for various productions, though her love for DJ-ing is what got these two together to make the kind of music that induces massive face melting and body-reverberating bass.

When one listens to them, several international producers & artists come to mind, including Skrillex, The Bloody Beetroots, Daft Punk, Justice and a ton more influences.  What is even more impressive, however, is the fact that they are the brains behind what is the only (and biggest, for that matter) EDM network in the country, EDM Philippines.

Increasing awareness on EDM by the minute

Curse & Bless have also founded a collective of producers & DJs in the Philippines (of which yours truly is a part) called Kurai.  This collective aims to turn the industry on its head, and it doesn’t seem to be long from now before that happens.

Theo Martel Alpas (Theo Martel), Kaiizer Tabuada (Mister Krumbs), Karen Toyoshima (Curse & Bless), Derek Amar (Schmaltz Music), Jared Celemin (Curse & Bless), Ramil Centena (Schmaltz Music) and some drunk, red-faced, banana cap-wearing guy called Mistah NerF… #KURAIMUTHAFUKKAZ (Bacolod’s Dubstep King, Zemi Quintos AKA Zeetrex, was MIA at that moment)

They are currently working on new projects, some which are actually quite large in scale and would definitely pave the way for producers & DJs like them to create an industry standard the likes of no one has ever seen.  Of course, they’re also hard at work on a new EP which appropriately describes the music they make… SAVAGE.

Yep, totally legit Pinoy EDM that goes beyond the shores in terms of quality

With EDM gradually being on the rise in the Philippines, one could not think of any perfect example of who will carry the flag, but C&B is as worthy as it gets.  The fire keeps burning; it’s only going to get brighter and hotter with these two around.

If you would like to know all about what they’ve got to offer, you only have to check out the link below.

Roald Velden tugs away at your heartstrings like a boss

Ah, love, that ever-powerful force that knows no bounds and is often the subject matter of various forms of media.  That even includes smart ass responses from 5th graders.

Told you...
Told you…

If there was a song that managed to capture that specific emotion effectively, it would be Roald Velden’s “Complicated.”  The song itself samples a few lines from The Legend of the Seeker series, and manages to hit the perfect note with what this song is all about.  I mean, every now and then we encounter a totally romantic situation wherein we just tend to complicate matters even further, right?  Sometimes, it’s as simple as saying what you really feel instead of hiding behind several layers of nonchalant stoicism or stone faced blandness…

You get what I mean?

Nonetheless, this track captures that feeling perfectly.  It is filled with vivid emotion which almost seems as if Roald could not contain himself any longer and just let out those feelings which have been hidden away for a long time, because he never had a chance to.  “Complicated” is a track about emotional honesty and avoiding regret as long as you still have the opportunity to express what you really feel.  Who knows how many nights I’ve spent listening to this track feeling downbeat and uplifted at the same time.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

You can check out more of Roald Velden over at his official website.

First times don’t last long, do they?

Hey guys!

It’s me, Mistah NerF, and it’s my absolute first time to be using a blog.  It’s pretty great trying out new things, and I have to say I could get the hang of this pretty well (until the next time I find another distraction to keep me preoccupied that is).

Exaggerating a bit, I guess…

Now that I’ve managed to get the basics down pat, you just might be wondering what in the blue hell am I doing here.  Well, I realize that Twitter and Facebook are social media platforms which allow me to connect with friends and followers on a more personal level with my music and whatever else I can post.  Yet, this is also a means for me to express myself on various things.  Besides, don’t you just find it annoying to read long-ass Facebook posts, especially since several-word essays on politics, emotions, daily ongoings and all of that stuff don’t seem suitable for such formats?  At least I’d be able to draw out my thoughts even further, hopefully reaching that point which I have been trying to make by the end of each entry on here (LOL, yes I realize I ramble quite often).

what some of you may be thinking at this very moment…

With that out of the way, I hope you guys enjoy what I have to say about certain things.  Perhaps I could even come up with some reviews on tracks that have managed to capture my interest and share my thoughts regarding them, feature a few of my fellow producers on here or even just do a regular posting of stuff that amuse & entertain me.  Either way, the sky’s the limit, as the old saying goes, and who knows what’ll happen here. Until then, peace out Nerfytes!

Skrillex x Robyn – Dancing on My Own (Mistah NerF Remix)

The undisputed master of hard edged EDM in the whole wide world (our opinion, of course)

Skrillex, AKA Sonny Moore, has always been considered as the punk god of EDM, and his music truly reflects that.  With roots that stem from a screamo-metalcore background, you can truly sense the rebellious nature that each and every track of his intends to showcase.  People go nuts over his sets, with millions attending each event, and adding to that a plethora of EPs & remixes which have certainly caused some massive face melting.

The uber-talented songstress from Sweden, now with a more mature sound that resonates with audiences everywhere

Robyn, on the other hand, first came to fame back in the mid-90’s with her track “Show Me Love”, which still continues to see some rotation in the airwaves in local radio stations.  Her newer work, on the other hand, have an edgier vibe to them.  While still pop dance in design, they certainly show quite the maturity, which only goes to reflect Robyn’s growth as an artist as well.

When you combine the two, you get a massive track which does not skimp out on groove, emotional dramatics and a sense of aggression.  Skrillex made a remix of “Dancing on My Own” which, unfortunately, never saw the light of day, except if you happened to attend some live shows by the man himself or his mentor, 12th Planet.  If you haven’t heard the original track, here it is.  Catchy and emotional, just the way we like it.

Nonetheless, leave it to Mistah NerF to take what was already a formed structure and build upon it even more.  Some would call this a remix, others who are more technical about semantics would refer to it as a bootleg.  However, with more than 8,000 plays already plus becoming a regularly featured track in MashupRadio.Com, this is one track that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already.  Listen to the track with the link provided below, and grab a free download while you’re at it!

Time to rock the electronic dance music scene in the Philippines like only NerF knows how!
